Fine lines above the lips can be caused by ageing and loss of volume, by using dermal fillers the skin cab be plumped up to give a more youthful appearance
Perioral lines are the lines that form above your top lip and are known by several different names including vertical lip lines, smoker’s lines or lipstick lines (where your lipstick bleeds into the lines above your lips).
Wrinkles and creases around our mouth often give people the impression that we are old, tired and sad but are often caused by a loss of facial volume and skin firmness. This could be through ageing, sun damage or lifestyle habits such as smoking or ill-fitting dental structures. These wrinkles can be very fine or more pronounced above the upper lip while some might be around the edge of the lips (nasolabial folds & marionette lines) or along the lower jaw. As the wrinkles are concentrated around the mouth the visibility is enhanced every time the mouth is moved, even when the movement is minimal.
These fine lines can be improved by using dermal fillers as they replace the volume lost by plumping up the skin under the wrinkle, achieving a more youthful and relaxed appearance without undergoing any surgery. By improving the volume of the upper lip you can stop the bleeding of lipstick into these fine lines and give your lips more definition. In some cases where there are deep lines, Dr Prerna Mittal will use a combination of dermal fillers and Botulinum Toxin type A to relax the muscles under the skin.
Dermal fillers can restore the loss of volume by providing structural supports to lift up the creases and smooth out fine lines as well as stimulating natural hyaluronic acid and collagen production. Dermal fillers can be also used for thin lips, nasolabial folds, marionette Lines, cheek and chin fillers.
*Patients experiences will vary dependent on age, lifestyle and medical history
The patient will need to book a consultation with Dr Mittal. The procedure is simple and straight-forward and only takes between 15 and 30 minutes, including the consultation time to discuss what you’d like to achieve from the non-surgical treatment.
Dr Mittal will inject a few tiny injections directly into the skin above the lip, around the mouth or lower jaw, depending on where your perioral lines are. You may feel some discomfort during the procedure so a local anesthetic cream can be applied first or some dermal fillers are available with local anaesthetic (0.3% lidocaine included) for a more comfortable treatment experience.
The procedure will vary from person to person as the severity of the lines being treated will be different for all patients.
The results can be seen immediately but it can take up to a week to see the final results as the patient may suffer from some bruising, swelling and redness as a result of the injections. This is a normal reaction for the majority of patients and the majority return to work immediately. Dr Prerna Mittal recommends that you do not partake in strenuous activity, apply make-up or touch your face for at least six hours post procedure.
Most dermal filler treatments will last from six months to about a year, with on-going top-up treatments to maintain results over a longer period-of-time.
